UTICA/OLD FORGE – Norma B. Schug passed away on Saturday, May 8, 2021, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, with her family at her side. Norma was born in Utica, the daughter of John and Nell (Cameron) Brennan. She attended Sacred Heart School and graduated from the former St. Francis de Sales High School before obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology from the College of St. Rose, Albany. On January 14, 1950, Norma married Donald T. Schug in Sacred Heart Church. They enjoyed a blessed union of over 33 years prior to his passing on May 27, 1983. She was a Social Worker for Oneida County Child Services before leaving to raise her family and to enjoy her children and grandchildren. Norma was named the 1994 “Woman of the Year” by the Business and Professional Women’s Club of Utica, Evening Division. She received the St. Elizabeth Hospital “Humanitarian of the Year”, the “Patriot-Humanitarian Award” by the Utica Assembly Knights of Columbus, and was a recipient of the Eleanor Nelson Award for her work with St. Elizabeth Hospital Guild. Norma was active in various community clubs and organizations. She served as secretary of the St. Elizabeth Hospital Development Council, a member of the Hospital Advisory Board, past president of the St. Elizabeth Hospital Guild, and hospital volunteer since 1970. She was also active outside the hospital as well. She was a member and past president of the College of St. Rose Alumni Association’s Utica Chapter, a member of the International Federation of Catholic Alumni, member and past president of the Catholic Women’s Club, a member of the Christ Child Society, board member of the Utica Area Marian Club of Notre Dame High School, a member of the Hospitality Ministry of the Good News Foundation, volunteered for the Syracuse Diocese Hope Appeal, and was a communicant of the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes. Norma has volunteered for the Juvenile Diabetes Association, the Central Association for the Blind, and the American Heart Association. Norma is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Patricia Schug, Whitesboro and Dr. Mark and Kacey Schug, Clinton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Ellen and James Carhart, New Hartford and Barbara and Henry Bergner, Old Forge; son-in-law, Roger Williams; grandchildren, Emily and Jeremy Kraeger, Matthew and Sarah Carhart, Molly Schug and Kareem Hamad, Sara and Brian Helmes, Andrew Carhart and Jody Hartman, Donald Schug III, Daniel Schug, Mary Kate and Erik Russell, and Kate Williams; great-grandchildren, Ellie, Alivia, Jackson, Noah, Mariam, Adam, Patrick, Caroline, Jack, Benjamin and Adelynn; niece, Constance Ferguson and her husband, Charles, and great-nephew, Timothy. Norma was predeceased by her daughter, Anne Schug Williams in 2017. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated on Wednesday (today) at 11 a.m. at the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes. The family will receive guests following Mass. Interment will be in St. Agnes Cemetery, Utica. In lieu of flowers, remembrances in Norma’s name may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Association (www.jdrf.org) or The 21 Club (www.the21club.org). The Schug family expresses their heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to their sister, Barbara and her husband, Henry for the wonderful care and attention they gave Mom which enhanced her quality of life over the years. They would also like to thank caregivers, Cynthia Law NP, Sue Rundell DPT, Jenn, Amy, Sandy and Nancy.
