Maureen T. Dooley

July 3, 1931 - March 17, 2022

Maureen T. Dooley, 90, passed away on Saint Patrick’s Day, March 17, 2022 at the home of her son, Patrick and daughter-in-law, Vicky whose loving care brought her great comfort in her final days Maureen was born on July 3, 1931, in Utica, NY, the daughter of Robert J. and Angela (Decker) Moore. She was graduated from Utica Catholic Academy and earned a Bachelor of Arts and Master’s Degree from Elmira College. Maureen continued her graduate studies at Syracuse University and Xavier University in Cincinnati. While in college, Maureen was an outstanding fencer and a member of I.W.F.A. She enjoyed sports and being outdoors; was an avid tennis player, ran 26 Boilermakers, skied, hiked, and climbed mountains including Kilimanjaro, Mt. Whitney, Mt. Fuji, and Nepal’s Mt. Mera and many, many others. Maureen married John J. Dooley at Historic Old St. John’s Church in Utica, NY on June 20, 1959, a blessed union of 44 years until his death in 2003. Maureen was a voracious reader of histories and loved English novels. She was one of a million people who demonstrated against nuclear arms in New York City in 1982. She also marched for racial justice and against the war in Vietnam. During her career, Maureen was employed by Historic Old St. John’s Church as an Inter-city Social Worker, was a teacher at Kernan School, and was a Supervisor for Market Research with Proctor & Gamble in Cincinnati. She also taught tennis for the Town of Deerfield. Maureen was a member of ADK 46er Club, Catskill 3500 Club, Appalachian Mt 48 Club, Sierra Club, Highpointers 44, Beaver Lake Nature Center, Utica Zoo and View, Old Forge and Munson Williams Proctor Art Institute. Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Kelly and Michael Parsons, Marcy, NY; sons and daughters-in-law, Devin and Elizabeth Dooley, Wilmington, NC, Terence Dooley, Chaumont, NY and Patrick and Victoria Dooley, New Hartford, NY; grandchildren, Daniel Karrat, Marcy, NY, Regan Dooley, Charleston, SC, Heylee and Sean Jackson, Albany, NY, Hayden Dooley, New Hartford, NY; Logan and Evan Dooley, New Hartford, NY; sister, Barbara Whitaker, New Hartford, NY; brother and sister-in-law, Dr. John R. and Ludmilla Moore, Remsen, NY; sister-in-law, Maureen Moore, Utica, NY and sister-in-law, Rita Cardillo, New Hartford, NY. Maureen was predeceased by her parents, father & mother-in-law, Francis & Edna Dooley, her brother, Terence Moore, and her brothers-in-law, James Whitaker, Alan Dooley, Vincent Dooley, Francis Dooley and Gerard Dooley, and sisters-in-law Lillian Dooley, Ann Dooley Brown, Barbara Dooley, Joan Dooley Draghi and Rita Dooley Quenan. Maureen was loved by her many nieces and nephews and had countless friends who shared in her adventures and travels, whether it be hiking in the Adirondacks or on her journeys throughout six of the seven continents. To her end, her family and friends were in her thoughts and her heart. Relatives and friends are invited and may call Wednesday from 4-6 p.m. at McGrath, Myslinski, Karboski & Nunn Funeral Directors, 470 French Rd., Utica. Funeral services will be on Thursday at 10 a.m. at Historic Old St. John’s Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Inurnment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, remembrances in Maureen’s name may be made to the Utica Zoo (www.uticazoo.org) or the Thea Bowman House (www.theabowmanhouse.org). Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Maureen proudly wrote this obituary.
