John L. Cahalan

October 17, 1923 - February 11, 2021

UTICA – John L. Cahalan, 97, passed away on February 11, 2021, at Sitrin Health Care Center. John was born on October 17, 1923, in Utica, to the late Luke and Rose (Halpin) Cahalan. He attended Niagara University and served in the US Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1946. On October 22, 1955, John married Elaine Murphy in The Church of Our Lady of Lourdes. They enjoyed a blessed union of over 30 years prior to her passing on August 26, 1986. John owned and operated Mohawk Valley Barber & Beauty Supply prior to retiring. Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Daniel Reilly, Mary Lane, Catherine and Fred Kupiec, and daughter-in-law, Alison Cahalan; sister, Mary Rose Cahalan; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. John was predeceased by his son, Lawrence; son-in-law, James Lane, as well as his brothers and sisters-in-law, James, William (Julie), Peter (Pat), and Michael. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated on Wednesday, February 17 at 10:30 a.m. at The Church of Our Lady of Lourdes. All Covid safety protocols will be followed. Interment will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Whitesboro. In lieu of flowers, remembrances in John’s name may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (www.stjude.org) or Notre Dame Elementary School, 11 Barton Ave, Utica, NY 13502.
