February 6, 1931 - November 26, 2021
** PLEASE NOTE** DUE TO A POSITIVE COVID TEST IN THE FAMILY, SERVICES HAVE BEEN POSTPONED UNTIL THE SPRING. Edwin J. Synakowski passed away peacefully on November 26, 2021, with his loving family by his side. He was born on February 6, 1931, in Utica, NY, the son of John and Julia Synakowski. Following his high school graduation from U.F.A. in 1949, Ed worked as a carpenter with local contractors. With the Korean War escalation, he enlisted in the Navy on January 3, 1951, serving aboard the heavy cruiser U.S.S. Des Moines and later the U.S.S. New Jersey as a damage controlman. He was honorably discharged in November 1954. Ed was proud of his service and enjoyed telling sea stories. On August 28, 1955, Ed married the love of his life, his sweetheart Jeanette M. Walewski, in St. Mary’s Church in New York Mills, NY. They were inseparable (their love story endured for 40 years until her passing), and raised their children Michael, MaryEllen, Christine, and Julie at their home in Yorkville, NY, and at their summer home in Verona Beach, NY. Ed joined General Electric in 1957 as an electronic repair technician while continuing courses at MVCC and Utica College. He retired in 1990 as manager of the contractor administration unit. Ed was a lover of hobbies and continued many of them for most of his life. During the summer, Ed enjoyed boating and fishing at Oneida Lake with his son Michael and father-in-law Stanley Walewski and building and flying model aircraft. Countless hours of family fun were enjoyed in dad's pool. Even after his days as a carpenter, he brought his love of woodworking home with him in his basement woodshop. He spent days, months, some time years bringing furniture, carvings and wooden boats to life that his family will treasure in their homes forever. He also enjoyed painting in his younger days. Ed spent countless hours helping all of his children and grandchildren with any project they requested of him. He enjoyed visits to Cape Cod, Las Vegas, Hilton Head, and many visits to the Caribbean Islands. He treasured his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and looked forward to spending even more time together. Ed was predeceased by his loving wife Jeannette in 1994 and beloved son Michael in 2012. He is survived by three daughters, Mary Ellen Andreski and husband, Don, Christine Quinn and husband, Jeff, Julie Ford and husband, Stacey; four grandchildren, Christopher Andreski, Courtney Andreski-Saxton and Scott Saxton, Alexis Stone and Michael Stone, and Shannon Marrero and Michael Marrero; two great-grandchildren, Milo Cruz Marrero and Lucy Sophia Saxton; two brothers, Ted and wife, Carol and John, numerous nieces and nephews and countless lifelong friends. Ed’s family would like to thank Hospice and the Abraham House in Rome for the compassion shown to all of us during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Church of Sacred Heart & St. Mary Our Lady of Czestochowa in New York Mills, NY. Arrangements are under the direction of Kowalczyk Funeral Home, 470 French Rd., Utica. Messages of sympathy at www.kowalczykfuneralhomes.com
