Charles B. (Barney) Gibbons

July 26, 1935 - November 7, 2021

WHITESBORO - Charles B. (Barney) Gibbons, 86, left this world on November 7, 2021. He passed peacefully from complications after a stroke. Barney was born to the late Robert C. Gibbons and Mildred Strain Gibbons on July 26, 1935, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He grew up in Ridgewood, New Jersey, and moved to Utica, New York as a high school senior. Barney graduated from Utica Free Academy in 1953, where he met his future wife, Barbara. Barney earned a degree in chemistry from the University of Rochester in 1958 and served in the United States Army Reserves. Barney married Barbara McCoy on September 27, 1958, in Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church, New Hartford. They enjoyed 57 years together prior to her death on February 4, 2016. Barney was employed by Bendix Corporation, later Allied Signal, and then Honeywell on Seward Ave in Utica until his retirement in 1992. Barney co-founded Riverhawk Corporation of New Hartford in 1993. He served on the board of directors for the Mid-York Library System and was active in St. Anne’s Catholic Church and Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church. Together with his wife Barbara, they enjoyed many activities including camping, skiing, and square dancing. His children remember with great fondness the adventurous bicycle trip through Yellowstone National Park in 1977. Barney is survived by daughters, Susan G. Peterson of Cumberland, RI; Karen (Randall) Tatro of Shrewsbury, MA; son, Russell (Amanda) Gibbons of Granger, IN; sisters-in-law, Irene Johnston, Carol Brady, and Betty Shamblin; brother-in-law Neil (Marie) McCoy; granddaughter, Jacqueline Tatro; grandsons, Brian Tatro, Kyle (Shirley) Gibbons and Brett Gibbons, as well as, many nieces and nephews. Barney was predeceased by his brother, Gerald Gibbons, and brothers-in-law, George Johnston and Donald Brady. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Friday, November 19th from 4 to 6 p.m. at McGrath, Myslinski, Karboski & Nunn Funeral Directors, 470 French Road, Utica. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, November 20th at 9:30 a.m. at Mary, Mother of Our Savior Parish, Our Lady of the Rosary Campus, 1736 Burrstone Road, New Hartford. Interment will follow in Forest Hill Cemetery next to his wife and parents. The family is grateful for the Ernestine Raclin House Center for Hospice Care in Mishawaka, IN and suggests that, in lieu of flowers, a donation to Hospice be considered. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Messages of sympathy at www.mmknfd.com
