UTICA – Catherine E. Kryszczuk, 86, passed away on Monday, October 4, 2021, at Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare after a brief illness. Catherine was born on November 30, 1934, in Richfield Springs, the daughter of the late Martin and Mary (Hugick) Sarafin. She was a graduate of Richfield Springs High School, Class of 1953, and continued her education at St. Elizabeth School of Nursing, graduating in 1959. On September 21, 1957, Catherine married Leo Kryszczuk in St. Joseph’s Church, Richfield Springs. They enjoyed a blessed union of 22 years before his passing in 1979. Catherine was employed with St. Elizabeth Hospital for several years in the Nursery Unit. Later in life, she was a nurse’s aide for many years at St. Luke’s Hospital until her retirement. Catherine was a communicant of Sacred Heart & St. Mary, Our Lady of Czestochowa Parish where she was a longtime member of the choir. She was also a past member of the Perpetual Adoration Chapel at St. Joseph St. Patrick Church. Catherine will be remembered as a simple and gentle soul who was willing to befriend anyone she met. Surviving are her two sons, Michael (Eva) Kryszczuk, Whitesboro and Daniel Kryszczuk, Atlanta, GA; brother, Paul (Linda) Sarafin, Richfield Springs; sisters, Martha Stark, Herkimer, Marian Staruck, Jordanville, Genevieve (Robert) Buddle, and Ann Szeflinski, all of Richfield Springs; granddaughters, Ania (Drake) Wilson and Sylvia Kryszczuk and many nieces and nephews. Catherine was predeceased by six brothers, Stanley, Charles, John, Leon, Martin, and Joseph Sarafin; two infant sisters, Ida and Emma Sarafin, and grandson, Matthew Kryszczuk. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated on Thursday at 1 p.m. at Sacred Heart & St. Mary, Our Lady of Czestochowa Church, New York Mills. Entombment will be in Resurrection Chapel Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, remembrances in Catherine’s name may be made to the Memorial Fund of Sacred Heart & St. Mary’s Church. Envelopes will be available at the Mass. The Kryszczuk family extends their sincere gratitude to the doctors and nurses, especially Nancy, at Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare ICU for the compassionate care provided to Catherine. Arrangements are under the direction of McGrath, Myslinski, Karboski & Nunn Funeral Directors, Utica.
